Building a Fashion Brand in 2023

Happy New Year to y'all, Fashionistas! I hope that your 2023 will be a great one! Can we start 2023 by building your fashion brand?

Please and please, this year, while you strive to make good profit in your fashion business, PLEASEEEE, make sure you're actively building a BRAND too! And no, I'm not being all 'fancy' right now! I'm not talking about logos, fancy packaging, or colours. I'm talking about REAL assets that your company can stand on for the long term!

It's okay if you don't know where to start, you've got me! So, without beating around the bush, I'll tell you why it is important to build a brand.

You're more likely to be treated as 'VIP' when you wear a Gucci sneakers than when you wear a random nameless sneaker that you got from Alibaba. Why? Because Gucci has spent time, money, and effort to position that sneaker as a "valuable" investment in people's minds. There is a perception of the kind of people that wear Gucci and it is perceived that those people should be 'respected' or in other words, be treated as "VIPs".

How did Gucci do this successfully? I'll tell you in a sec!

BRAND VALUES

Valuable brands establish guiding principles or beliefs for their brand. These are usually central to everything the company does.

Your company's objective and what distinguishes you from competitors should be reflected in your brand's beliefs. Consider what makes your business unique and what it stands for.

A good example of Brand Values could be "Excellence, innovation, craftmanship" Therefore a company that chooses to have these 3 as its core values will ensure that they produce excellent and innovative products with great craftsmanship. This will also be seen in their communication and relationship with clients.

Internally, when the company deals with its staff, these core values will be important yardsticks to measure performance. Everything the company does, these core values will be their standard of operation.

So what are your core values? How do you see the world and how do you want others to see you and relate to you?

YOUR TARGET MARKET

Once you have clearely defined your core values, the next thing to define is your target market. Understanding who you want to sell to is crucial for any business, and fashion is no different.

This is because this knowledge will help you when it comes to the kind of products to make, the place to be, the pricing strategy, and the communication strategy to use to get the audience you want.

You can consider factors like age, gender, location, and personal style when identifying your target market. There's much more to consider but these are always a good start.

This will help you create branding materials that resonate with your target audience.

VISUAL IDENTITY

The next thing you want to do us to develop a visual identity. Your visual identity is like the "face" of the "person" called your brand. It will help the audience to identify it among other products of the same category.

The little swash of Nike on its sneakers helps you differentiate it from Addidas, Gucci, and others. Therefore it is important to deliberately create your brand's visual identity and communicate it accordingly.

They include elements like your logo, color scheme, fonts, and overall aesthetic. These should be consistent across all marketing materials, from your website to your social media channels. That's how to get you recognizable!

BRAND VOICE

Now it's time to create a brand voice for your brand. Your brand voice should be reflected in the language you use in your marketing materials and on social media.

Do you want to sound professional, playful, mature, audacious, rebellious, or cool aunt, these are all brand voices that you can choose for your brand.

But here's a very important tip; it has to resonate with your audience. For example, if you are targeting professional women in business and management, you want your brand voice to be professional and relatable to them. So also, if you're targeting Gen-Zs, you might want to use some cool terms and "slangs" that they understand, else, you'll lose them.

You'll use your brand voice mostly during communicating with your audience either on social media, your website, your campaigns, or marketing! Anytime you talk to your audience, you want to ensure that you use your right brand voice and it should be consistent with your brand values. Again, make sure it appeals to your target market ALWAYS.

RIGHT MEDIA POSITION

When you have successfully done the afore-listed 'ground work', the next thing to do is to utilize social media well. Social media is a powerful tool for building & promoting your brand as well as engaging with customers.

You can use platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to showcase your products, share behind-the-scenes content, and interact with your audience.

COLLABORATIONS

Finally, collaborating with the right influencers can help to expose your brand to a larger audience.

Look for influencers who align with your brand values and have a large, engaged following. Not all influencers should be considered. You want to ensure that the influencer you choose to work with has your RIGHT audience, else, it'll be a fruitless effort.
